Complication

#mechanics #ability
Any character that rolls outside his Window by 1 in either direction has rolled a complication. In general any player rolling a complication is presented two choices:

1 - Consider the roll a Hit but also take a State,

OR

2 - Choose to deliberately withdraw the attempt as though it never happened.

If the player goes through and considers the roll a hit, the character has accepted a risky opening to get a hit but opens themselves to states, which negatively modify their position in some way.

States are dependent on Skill Tree choices or GM fiat. The usual state, barring circumstances or Skill Tree choices, is Off-Balance.

Or if the player pulls back and chooses to withdraw the attempt, the character has recognized that committing will open themselves to states, and instead quickly retracts to their previous position. Essentially this is a return to status quo from before the roll, neither getting the hit nor suffering the state.
